Defibtech Lifeline™ PRO and ECG AEDs Cleared for Sale in U.S.
Source: Defibtech

Guilford, Conn. – Jan. 23, 2013 – Featuring a revolutionary color LCD video display and 3-lead ECG monitoring capability, the Defibtech  Lifeline™ PRO and Lifeline ECG automated external defibrillators (AEDs) have been cleared for sale in the U.S. market by the Food and Drug Administration. AEDs are designed to revive victims of sudden cardiac arrest, which strikes about 380,000 Americans each year and is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

“With the addition of the Lifeline PRO and ECG AEDs, the entire family of Lifeline AEDs is now available in the U.S.,” said Defibtech CEO Dr. Glenn W. Laub. “There are excellent options for every customer, no matter the budget or the need. With sudden cardiac arrest such a common and foreseeable occurrence, all workplaces and public places should take the reasonable precaution of having at least one AED onsite.”

Both the Lifeline PRO and ECG AEDs are designed for professional responders. The Lifeline PRO provides full manual control over shock energy and delivery as an option. When the Lifeline PRO is operated in manual mode, an ECG appears on the color video display, and the rescuer can select the energy level and decide when to initiate charge and shock.
Operating in semi-automatic or “AED” mode, both the Lifeline PRO and ECG AEDs can display either an ECG or video instructions for the rescuer. In this mode, the AED determines whether or not a shock is warranted through field-proven arrhythmia detection technology. Both models’ video and audio provide guidance on where to place the defibrillating pads and give step-by-step lifesaving instructions. For example, when the audio says, “Place pads on patient’s chest,” the video shows exactly where to place the pads.

Both the Lifeline PRO and ECG AEDs continue Defibtech’s tradition of ease-of-maintenance with extensive configuration and information menus presented on the color video display. When CPR protocols change, users can update the audio and video instructions in the field by installing a software upgrade.

Both the Lifeline PRO and ECG AEDs are also distinguished by ruggedness and durability, award-winning ergonomic design, and biphasic technology, a clinically proven waveform and algorithm to deliver shocks and save lives.

About Defibtech
Defibtech, LLC, relentlessly pursues one goal: making the best AEDs in the world at affordable prices. Green Seal Releases New Standard for Sustainable Industrial and Institutional Laundry Products
Source: Green Seal

Washington, DC – January 24, 2013 - Green Seal™, the nation’s oldest non-profit environmental certification organization, announces the publication of GS-51, a new standard designed specifically to address the life cycle impacts of laundry care products for institutional and industrial settings.

Traditional laundry products are significant contributors to water pollution, and both manufacturers and users risk exposure to harmful chemicals through inhalation and skin contact when using many of these products.

In addition to minimizing or eliminating the use of many hazardous ingredients often found in these products, GS-51 provides an important benchmark in terms of product concentration. The standard establishes minimum requirements for concentrated (2X) and ultra-concentrated (4X) detergents and fabric softeners.

“Research has shown that the environmental impact of these products can be reduced by concentrating the product, thereby minimizing its volume,” says Dr. Arthur Weissman, President and CEO of Green Seal. “Concentrated products use less packaging material and contain less water, meaning fewer pallets to transport, fewer trucks on the road, and less storage space needed. These improvements represent a smaller carbon footprint as well.”

The new Green Seal standard also focuses on product performance. A framework for performance testing was developed for the standard in cooperation with the laundry care industry. Certified products must demonstrate that they perform as well as leading laundry care products.

About 80 percent of the environmental impact of these products occurs during usage, so the standard requires that labels recommend using the proper amount, washing at the lowest possible temperature, and washing a full load.

GS-51 covers more than 20 categories of products for conventional laundry and dry cleaning, including detergents, prewash products, and spot removers; additives such as alkali boosters; and fabric care products such as anti-static treatment, starches, and fabric softeners.

Green Seal offers this new standard to manufacturers as a way to recognize leaders in the industry, and to give purchasers a way to identify safer, more environmentally preferable institutional laundry products.

More information about GS-51, including certification tools, application information, and the standard, can be downloaded for free at www.GreenSeal.org.

Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice Announces Partnership with Xenith Football Helmets
Source: Xenith LLC

LOWELL, Mass., Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Xenith LLC, manufacturer of the X2 football helmet and other protective equipment, today announced an extended partnership with Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice , a two-time NFL All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl selection.  Rice, who has been wearing the popular Xenith X2 football helmet since 2011, began serving as a Xenith brand ambassador in 2012.  Rice will continue to promote Xenith's innovative X2 helmet while now serving as the face of Xenith's national player safety campaign and promoting the company's corporate mission of advancing safety and activity through innovation and education. Rice, teammate Matt Birk , (the NFL's most recent winner of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award) and others will be wearing Xenith's X2 football helmet in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, February 3, 2013.

"The subject of concussions and CTE is arguably the most topical sports health issue today and I am excited to work with Xenith to advance technology and help protect athletes at all levels of play," said Rice. "All athletes should be smart about what they wear to protect their head, and I believe the Xenith X2 helmet is the most innovative helmet on the market today. Speaking from personal experience, I have had the most successful years of my career while wearing the X2. I look forward to wearing the helmet in Super Bowl XLVII and beyond."

The partnership between Xenith and Rice will serve to promote Xenith's comprehensive approach to risk reduction, which emphasizes proper technique, rule enforcement, culture change, superior equipment and proper management of injuries.

"Ray is a perfect person to represent the Xenith brand," said Xenith CEO, John Duerden .  "He has a comprehensive understanding of the importance of player safety (both short and long term) and is committed to serve as a role model to help educate young athletes and truly make a difference."

Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon also stands by Xenith's technology advancements, and has joined the Xenith team to help provide concussion education and awareness at Super Bowl XLVII. "Xenith has designed an innovative helmet which focuses on fit, comfort and protection," said Moon. "The company's philosophy complements the changes which Xenith and I have been advocating in other aspects of the game to help protect current and former players."

Unlike traditional football helmets that use foam padding, Xenith helmets break entirely new ground by utilizing 12-18 shock absorbers that act as individual air bags for the head/brain. In addition, the patented "fit system" enables a player to personally adjust the fit of the helmet and the balance of the shock absorbers on the field. This feature has been particularly successful in preventing the frequent flying-off of helmets and is just part of what differentiates Xenith helmets from the competition.

Xenith LLC was founded in 2004 by Vin Ferrara, who was the starting quarterback at Harvard University where he was an All-Ivy League selection and left as the third-ranked passer in school history. After graduating from Harvard, it was Ferrara's own experience with sports-related injuries that inspired him to obtain both his medical and MBA degrees from Columbia so that he could affect change in head/brain safety through this revolutionary helmet.

Xenith helmets have been worn by approximately 100,000 players at all levels throughout youth, high school, major college and the NFL.  Xenith is the Official Helmet of the Snoop Youth Football League, the Deion Sanders Truth Football League and Steve Clarkson 's Throwback Football League.  Xenith helmets were worn exclusively by the high school All-Americans in the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the 2012 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.

About Xenith
Based in Lowell, Massachusetts, Xenith was founded to advance safety and activity through innovation and education.  Xenith Adaptive Head Protection® is a system of patented technologies designed to provide superior fit and to minimize the sudden movement of the head during impact.

New App Calculates Pool Pad Energy Savings
Source: Hayward Pool Products

ELIZABETH, NJ (January 18, 2012) Hayward Pool Products has unveiled a first-of-its-kind software app that will allow pool professionals and owners to calculate the energy usage and potential savings of their swimming pool products.

The easy-to-use Energy Solutions Calculator app computes the estimated savings by switching to Hayward Energy Solutions products, including the EcoStar® family of variable-speed pool pumps. Additionally, the app will demonstrate how much more can be saved by transitioning other Hayward energy-efficient solutions such as: cleaners, heat pumps or heaters, automation, LED lighting or filters.

According to Mike Massa, Vice President of North American Sales, the app is intended to help pool owners save money and lower their carbon footprint. “Clearly, we want to demonstrate the potential savings pool owners can realize by switching to one or more of Hayward’s entire suite of Energy Solutions products. Ultimately, we are hoping to raise pool owner’s and operator’s awareness of what is possible in terms of both energy and cost savings. The Energy Solutions Calculator mobile app is a very effective tool for dealers in their stores and tradesmen in backyards. They can show pool owners what they can expect to save with our Energy Solutions.” The app is now available for free download at the U.S. Apple Store for the iPad, as well as at http://www.hayward.com.

To use the Energy Solutions Calculator, pool pros and owners start by simply choosing their state of residence. The app then estimates parameters that the user can adjust to their specific situation. These options include: horsepower of current pump; average daily run time of pool; rate currently paid for electricity (in dollars per kilowatt-hours); size of pool in gallon; and approximate length of pool season.

Using this information, the app will demonstrate how much can be saved in energy costs by switching to Hayward's EcoStar variable-speed pump and other Energy Solutions. Users can even test a simulation of the pumps actual control panel, allowing them to adjust the pump to different speeds by simply sliding the app buttons to view actual savings when operating the pump at different speeds. This further helps users appreciate the tremendous energy savings potential when running pumps at lower speeds.

Hayward's Energy Solutions are designed to be a cost-savings solution for pool owners to replace their pool pad's older equipment. Hayward Pool Products strives to develop products that are not only environmentally friendly but also benefit pool owners in terms of ease-of-operation and efficiency, while providing energy savings.

Daktronics Helps Iowa State Take Game-Day Production Online
Source: Daktronics

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Jan. 22, 2013 – Daktronics of Brookings, S.D., recently helped Iowa State University upgrade their video production capabilities beyond in-venue video displays. The Cyclones can now stream sporting events online to the university’s website, Cyclones.tv, with broadcast quality.

The solution Daktronics provided integrates two different productions for two different audiences – one production for the live event atmosphere and one for those watching online. The new equipment, which includes a version of Daktronics Show Control System coupled with a TriCasterTM unit (a third-party product), allows the university to take multiple feeds from the video display production and stream them online. This equipment provides an online stream with the unique ability to cut to commercial, sponsor messages, statistical layouts and more, separate from what is being shown to the audience inside the venue.

Another unique aspect is that this equipment isn’t tied to one venue or control room. It is mobile and can be taken to whatever location necessary to provide an online stream of media days and other special events.

“Cyclones.tv is off to a phenomenal start in just six months,” said Tyler Rutherford, Director of Website Services for Iowa State University. “Our subscriber base is number two in our web provider’s streaming network, which includes schools such as LSU, Oregon, Nebraska and Duke. Our new equipment upgrades and graphic package have allowed us to deliver broadcast-quality streams to digital and now linear platforms. Our fans and even our Big 12 Conference counterparts have taken notice to the increase in quality of our broadcasts.”

Along with the equipment, Daktronics Creative Services provided a content package including lower thirds, side bars and other templates to help brand the online stream for Iowa State.

Online streaming of events has gained popularity over the years and, specifically within the BIG 12 Conference, has created a platform for broadcasting events that are not picked up for television broadcast including some basketball and football games as well as other sports such as volleyball, soccer, softball and more.

“I think this shows Daktronics depth as a company,” said Bryan Perry, Daktronics Event Producer. “We are usually thought of in terms of LED displays, but we’ve provided custom content, event support and now an additional live-streaming production to top it all off. We’ve shown that we can deliver on almost any game-day production aspect requested of us.”

Daktronics Show Control System, included for this project, provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a user-friendly production solution. For more information on Show Control, visit www.daktronics.com/show.

Brock International Creates Safety MVP Contest to Promote the Importance of Playing Field Safety
Source: Brock International

Boulder, Colorado - (January 22, 2013) – Brock International has launched its Safety MVP Contest to recognize U.S. schools that value safety as much as having a winning team. The school with the most compelling entry will win the Grand Prize of $5,000 worth of sports equipment.  Brock, an active voice in concussion prevention and education, recently launched Brock PowerBase Youth Safety Research (YSR), the first synthetic turf safety and drainage layer engineered specifically for young athletes.

“With the escalating number of concussions and brain injuries nationwide, we wanted to recognize schools that place a high value on keeping their student-athletes safe,” said Dan Sawyer, CEO of Brock International.  “Our team hopes this contest will bring more attention to the proactive efforts being taken by coaches, schools, parents and America’s youth to reduce the quantity and severity of injuries on the playing field.”

The Brock Safety MVP Contest is open to middle school and high school students in the United States that can demonstrate why safety is as important as winning to their team using video submissions of no longer than five minutes in length. Students must create the video from concept to completion, and coaches, faculty, staff, athletes and their families are encouraged to participate.  Entries must be received by April 1, 2013. To learn more, visit www.saferyouthsports.org.

Head-to-surface injuries are one of the four major impact areas in which athletes experience brain injuries. Brock PowerBase YSR is the only product of its kind scaled to the ideal footing requirements and safety of high school and middle school athletes. The company’s PowerBase technology, used underneath more than 25 million square feet of synthetic turf fields worldwide, has been proven to decrease G-max, which may reduce the risk and severity of concussions, and injuries to hips, elbows and knees caused by high body to surface impact.

Research firm BioMechanica, LLC studied the estimated risk of head injury on synthetic turf surfaces with Brock underlayment and found the product reduces G-max, the peak force of impact, which the lab tests indicated should reduce the risk and severity of concussion; provides the same G-Max and playability as a pristine natural grass field and mitigates field hardening over time. In evaluating Head Injury Criteria (HIC), also known as critical fall height, Sports Labs LLC found that Brock PowerBase offered significant improvement in HIC when compared to a turf field that featured a stone base.

About Brock International
Brock International is the leader in performance base systems for synthetic turf.  With over 25 million square feet of Brock Performance Base in play underneath athletic fields worldwide, the company engineers the best, safest and most sustainable playing surfaces in the world for athletes at all levels. Brock is an Official Education Partner of The Sports Legacy Institute, a Boston-based non-profit organization founded to advance the study, treatment, and prevention of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups.  In October 2011, Brock became the first company in the industry to have a Cradle to Cradle Certification CM for its combined drainage and shock pad product. Offering the only product in the market that can be closed loop recycled, Brock PowerBase is certified to the world’s most stringent environmental standards. ACE Introduces Two New Specialty Certifications
Source: American Council on Exercise

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2013) – Each year people across the globe resolve to lose weight and get healthier, but many lose motivation within the first few months. In an effort to curb that trend, American Council on Exercise (ACE) has introduced two new specialty certifications aimed at giving fitness and allied health professionals the knowledge and skills they need to influence long-term success.

ACE Weight Management and Mind Body specialty certifications help increase the marketability of certified professionals by arming them with expertise to effectively help people impacted by obesity and other health issues.

“These specialty certifications address two of the most common goals people have – weight loss and wellness,” said ACE Chief Science Officer Cedric Bryant, Ph.D. “With more than two of three adults in the United States struggling with weight, and more than 22.9 million yoga and Pilates participants last year, we believe the knowledge professionals gain with these specialty certifications will help them empower thousands of people to meet their fitness goals.”

Becoming a Weight Management Specialist will help fitness and allied health professionals address the needs of their weight loss clients with added knowledge about behavior modification, exercise program design, non-diet weight management, and nutrition strategies.

Curriculum for the specialty certification, introduced in conjunction with Healthy Weight Week (Jan. 20-26) that advocates healthy, diet-free lifestyles, also addresses specific populations including teens and children.

The Mind Body Specialty Certification covers Pilates and its application to exercise programs, traditional yoga movements that address the core and muscle strength, yoga for clients who suffer from body-image issues, yoga for cyclists and how to incorporate mind body exercise when working with senior adults.

“These specialty certifications complement the education and training fitness and allied health professionals already have,” Bryant said. “For personal trainers, group fitness instructors and health coaches specifically, they allow them to expand their knowledge in a specific field and stand out in our highly competitive industry.”

To earn a specialty certification, fitness and allied health professionals must complete a series of individual courses tailored to each subject. The Weight Management and Mind Body specialty certifications are each equivalent to 2.5 continuing education credits (25 hours of professional development). To find out more about becoming a specialist, visit ACEfitness.org.

About ACE
> Since 1985, American Council on Exercise (ACE) has evolved from a small nonprofit dedicated to educating people about proper fitness to a 50,000-strong network of certified Personal Trainers, Group Fitness Instructors, Health Coaches, and Advanced Health and Fitness Specialists. Sports & Fitness Industry Association Launches Lacrosse Council
Source: Sports & Fitness Industry Association

Philadelphia, PA – January 16, 2013 - More than 40 individuals representing 20 companies gathered for the inaugural SFIA Lacrosse Council meeting held at the US Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia. With the tremendous growth in lacrosse participation over the past several years, several brands indicated the desire to bring the industry together with the purpose of helping continue to grow the game lacrosse and to deal with many of the challenges associated with building on this momentum. Topics discussed at the initial meeting included presentations by US Lacrosse and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) on rules and standards issues relating to the Women’s and Men’s game, a review of the recent National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) lacrosse ball standard changes and an overview of injury data by Ann Carpenetti, Managing Director of Game Administration with US Lacrosse.

“While competing vigorously in the marketplace, we share common values and interests in helping to make the great and growing game of lacrosse even greater,” said Jim Archibald, Vice President of STX and Chair of the SFIA Lacrosse Council. “Through the Council, we will be able to consider and respond to many of the issues of interest to the lacrosse, sport and fitness communities.”

“US Lacrosse is thankful for the SFIA’s leadership in establishing a Lacrosse Council, and we look forward to deeper collaboration with the lacrosse industry on initiatives focused on the responsible growth of lacrosse,” Steve Stenersen, CEO of US Lacrosse, added.

During the meeting, SFIA staff shared research indicating lacrosse was poised for continued growth given the changes in the population over the past few years. While the game remains a force in terms of participation in the Middle Atlantic and South Atlantic corridors, participation in the sport has more than doubled since 2008 in the Mountain and Pacific regions of the country.

“It is clear from the turnout at the Lacrosse Council meeting on Saturday that the lacrosse industry sees the value in bringing the industry together to discuss the future of the sport,” said Jonathan Michaels, SFIA Director of Membership and Business Development. “Moving forward, the Lacrosse Council will facilitate dialogue related to the issues that are most important and of mutual interest to all of the organizations connected to the sport…grow the game initiatives and strengthening the relationships between all parties connected to the lacrosse industry are priorities.”

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association, the number one source for sport and fitness research, is the leading global trade association of manufacturers, retailers, and marketers in the sports products and fitness industry. SFIA seeks to promote sports and fitness participation as well as industry vitality through research, thought leadership, public affairs, public affairs, and member services. Sports & Fitness Coalition Announces PHIT America
Source: PHIT America

Silver Spring, MD – January 17, 2013 – This month, leading sports and fitness industry companies and organizations, as well as other corporate partners, will launch PHIT America, a year-round, educational, advocacy, and social media marketing campaign designed to reach millions of Americans. PHIT America will combat the obesity and sedentary activity crisis -- which is having an adverse effect on health care costs in the U.S. -- by promoting new legislation and grassroots programs that will help get Americans more active, playing more sports, getting fit and becoming healthier.

PHIT America is a new non-profit which has 118 Alliance Sponsors including eight ‘Founders,’ which initially started this campaign. The ‘Founders’ include ACTIVE Network, American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Didgebridge, Midtown Athletic Clubs, National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), Sears, Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

NSGA and SFIA were among the first organizations to join the PHIT America Alliance as a ‘Founders.’ Matt Carlson, NSGA President and CEO, and Tom Cove, SFIA President and CEO, agree there are many reasons why this new non-profit campaign is so important. “We realize a key to our industry is to grow sports and fitness participation. And, we also know increasing fitness levels will reduce health care costs. PHIT America will increase the number of Americans who are active, fit and healthy. We also have legislation in Congress that will help America get active and fit which will also benefit our industry. PHIT America is a ‘win-win’ opportunity for America and our industry.”

PHIT America has a robust consumer website -- www.PHITAmerica.org -- which covers topics including the obesity and sedentary crisis, benefits of being active and playing sports, why physical education is so important, ways to get active and healthy, and the U.S. legislation that PHIT America is supporting. Starting in late January, PHIT America will work with its 118 Alliance Sponsors by asking them to send 2-3 ‘News Flashes’ a month about various important topics. These ‘News Flashes’ will link to PHITAmerica.org, where there will be three main ‘calls to action:’

1. Advocate – We will encourage Americans to email their Members of Congress using our online tool to encourage them to pass key legislation (The PHIT Act and The PEP Program) that will help Americans become more active, play more sports, and become healthier. The PHIT Act, when passed, will allow Americans to use Pre-Tax Medical Accounts to pay for physical activity expenses. The PHIT Act will directly help the sports and fitness industry!

2. Participate – Americans will find it easy to get active and fit using PHITAmerica.org. Our Participation Database is the ‘online yellow pages’ of ways to get active or fit in local communities for more than 50 sports or activities. This will be the largest database ever assembled and will be a great tool for Americans to use time and time again. The leaders of the sports and fitness industry should refer their consumer contacts to this database.

3. Donate - We will ask Americans to give to our cause. When Americans donate, the vast majority of these funds will be invested as grants to support local sports grassroots and PE programs. This is another way that PHIT America will increase participation in sports and fitness activities.

This year-round campaign is being led by Jim Baugh, a sports industry veteran, who is a former President of Wilson Sporting Goods, current SFIA board member, and an inductee of the NSGA Sporting Goods Industry Hall of Fame. He has a strong background in helping to grow sports participation.

“We have talked about having an industry campaign for years. Now, we are going to do it,” said Baugh. “Sedentary trends do not show a positive outlook for our future. Our industry must work together to grow sport and fitness participation levels. It will not happen by itself.”

Baugh has been talking to companies and organizations in the sports and fitness industry for the past six months. Already, there are 118 companies and organizations that have joined the PHIT America Alliance. All present sponsors are on PHITAmerica.org. It is expected that up to 200 companies will join the Alliance by the end of 2013.

“It is so easy for every company in the industry to be part of the PHIT America Campaign. I invite everyone in this industry to join this great cause. Manufacturers, retailers, associations, event or league organizers, and the media see the benefits of this campaign,” said Baugh. “The ‘asks’ to be a Sponsor of the campaign are very minimal. The ROI is outstanding. It is time for everyone to get in this game and not ‘sit on the sidelines.’

Join the PHIT America Alliance. To learn more, send us an email at Alliance@PHITAmerica.org.”

PHIT America is an educational and advocacy campaign creating a Movement for a Fit and Healthy America. PHIT America is a non-profit corporation started by the SFIA (Sports and Fitness Industry Association) in late 2012. For more information about PHIT America, visit www.PHITAmerica.org. Some of the many sponsors include: Wilson, Rawlings, Franklin, Mizuno, Russell Athletic, Modell’s, Sport Chalet, Gatorade, New Balance, Saucony, AYSO, ACE Fitness, IDEA Fit, Life Fitness, Johnson Healthcare, Precor, IMG Academies, Konami, PGA of America, World Golf Foundation, NBA Fit, SI Golf, SKLZ, Riddell, USA Football, Athlon Sports, The Tennis Channel, Tennis Warehouse, among others.
