The project involved development of a new multisport NCAA Division I sports complex for training and competition purposes while being conscious of adjacent land uses. The design of the Cyclone Sports Complex capitalizes on multifunctional spaces shared by the soccer, softball, and track and field teams. The site configuration allows events for all programs to be ticketed in one location, while shared concessions areas, restrooms, lockers and storage spaces maximize the use of all amenities and significantly reduce single-use spaces.

Natural daylight is provided by clerestory windows into the team locker rooms and entry corridor. Shaded patio areas are provided to accommodate spectators during warm events. Graphics on exterior and interior wall surfaces recognize team and individual recognitions, and each spectator venue incorporates Iowa State Cyclone graphics, branded to personalize it for each sport.

Each part of the complex uses brick and metal panels to establish a strong visual expression. Materials selected for the architecture complement the adjacent residential neighborhoods and university housing. The project design incorporated sustainable stormwater management concepts and was able to reduce stormwater runoff into the nearby neighborhood.
