The Richcraft Recreation Complex-Kanata (RRCK) serves the community in the northwest sector of the city. The facility was designed to promote health, fitness and wellbeing, offering a variety of programs for all age groups, from preschool children to seniors, including general interest and specialized levels. The complex offers a range of community and recreation facilities, including a 3,500-square-foot fitness facility featuring cardio and weight training; two gymnasiums; community rooms; an eight-lane, 25-meter pool; a leisure pool; and multipurpose rooms. A synthetic turf field and outdoor activity areas — including a splash pad, playgrounds, basketball courts and a skate park — complete the programming.

Situated on six hectacres of previously undeveloped land, the complex preserves its natural setting. The facility takes advantage of existing trails with an outdoor education center and cross-country ski trails for use in winter months.

In keeping with residents’ concerns about the environmental impact of the complex, sustainable measures were taken with the goal of achieving LEED Gold certification. Design considerations included ground-source heating and cooling, as well as graywater and heat-recovery systems for the pool and showers areas. A green roof is located on the southwest corner of the building directly over the pool change rooms.
