While academics are the first order of business at this acclaimed high school, social development and personal growth are important to the overall education of its nearly 3,000 students. With 102 clubs and activities that involve nearly the entire student body, there was plenty of competition for space.

The new facility, designed to house multiple activities at once, meets the school district’s goal to foster this overwhelming student interest in extracurricular activities. The lower level of the field house includes a 200-meter track; four basketball courts; four volleyball courts; 16 badminton courts; long jump, high jump, discus and pole vault areas; a 30,000-square-foot synthetic turf auxiliary gym; a wrestling room; a dance studio; a trainer’s room; public changing rooms and coaches’ offices. In addition, the upper level houses a cheerleading studio, additional classroom space, a 9,000-square-foot fitness facility that overlooks the field house, and the newly located athletic director’s office suite, making this facility the athletic hub of campus. The “V” from the school’s mascot Viking is used throughout the facility — from the large scale of the stair towers that are lit to be viewed from the adjacent stadium, to the interior display case that celebrates the rich history of the Vikings, to even the smaller scale of the room signage.

This healthful, energy-efficient learning environment is LEED registered, with a certification goal of Gold.
