The newly refurbished LEED Silver Houston Gymnasium has thoroughly modernized its campus sports, creating optimal facilities for the student-athlete and a new campus recreation center for all.

Built in 1959, the building had experienced significant modifications over time, leading to a confused labyrinth of spaces. The renovation established a clear circulation pattern at each level, enhancing wayfinding, supervision and security. A new iconic entry was created with views back toward campus. Spaces were opened up to each other where possible. Office suites took advantage of existing window locations and daylighting opportunities. The fitness room was relocated to the second floor and expanded, taking advantage of exterior views, higher ceilings and existing skylights. It is adjacent to a new student lounge space, the gymnasium and the pool overlook, and immediately above the general lockers and racquet courts.

The design grouped athletic office spaces and centralized athlete support facilities. In addition, dedicated lockers were created for each team, the varsity weight room was expanded, and general lockers and swim/dive team rooms were located directly off the existing pool deck. Handicap access was improved throughout the multiple levels, creating a fully accessible facility.
