Faced with aging recreation facility infrastructure and increased demand for community recreational programming, the town of Halton Hills commissioned the Mold-Masters SportsPlex expansion to promote wellness, accessibility and sustainability for active living. The town produces some very high-level hockey players, and the need for additional ice time was becoming urgent as the population shifted towards a younger demographic.

The expansion brought two NHL-regulation ice sheets, each with spectator seating for 250, to the existing arena, as well as 12 team rooms, four referee change rooms and community multipurpose rooms. A new entry plaza creates a shared public space between the existing and new pads.

The community rooms are continuously glazed, with views to both pads. Translucent insulated glazing punctuates the facility’s exterior elevations, which are oriented to provide ample natural light for both pads, making it possible to hold a public skate without the use of electric light.
