Platte County Community Center South Renovation

Parkville, MO
Construction Cost: $7.1 million
Area / Square Feet: 20,514
Occupancy Date: July 2014

After designing the indoor recreation system in 2004, WNB Architects was again tapped by the Platte County commission to expand and renovate both the Platte County Community Center North and South locations after memberships and usage exceeded original projections. Between the two facilities, membership has reached approximately 18 percent of the total population.

The expansion allowed for the county to build upon its partnership with the Greater Kansas City YMCA. The county paid for and owns the building, while the YMCA organization runs and programs it.

New features of the $7.12 renovation include an expanded natatorium to accommodate demand for lap swimming, an expanded wellness center, new group exercise studios, a free weights studio, a second multigenerational space, a personal training studio and improvements to the teaching kitchen. Through the careful design of highly visible main building areas, operators are able to maintain control and safety, while users can easily find their way around.

The renovation was planned with the user in mind. Based on member feedback of current demands, and an eye toward the future, the design team planned spaces based on current trends, with the ability to adapt as requirements evolve.
