The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and Medical Center is the result of a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and Pittsburgh’s National Hockey League franchise. The facility represents a first-of-its-kind sports performance center and practice rink, with the goal of making it a top spot in the country for hockey training and injury treatment and prevention.

The athletic facility is primarily geared toward hockey players but is open to all athletes. It contains 25,000 square feet of private space for the Penguins, as well as public spaces. The public portion of the center has 1,500 square feet of space for hockey skills training, including a synthetic ice resistance skating lane, an ice rink treadmill, and other hockey-centered equipment. It features a team store, 14 locker rooms, skate rentals, event rooms, a café and a glass-enclosed fireplace.

In addition to the athletic component, the sports medicine side of the complex is the first hockey-focused facility of its kind in the country. It features 24 private patient rooms, a physical therapy suite overlooking the ice rinks, aquatic therapy, and onsite MRI and x-ray imaging.

Interior design focused on materials that could stand the test of time. Flooring was chosen based on its ability to accommodate heavy foot traffic. Exterior design called for three main entry points, allowing for the privacy of the professional athletes using the facility.
