Chesapeake College built the Health Professions and Athletics Center with the goal of creating a visually prominent facility that would anchor the campus entrance and integrate the allied health and athletic programs through shared spaces and informal interaction. The facility allows the school to host regional tournaments and to educate more than 1,000 health professions students.

Sited near a central walkway that links commuter parking to campus, the building features the main gymnasium, a large multipurpose room, a fitness center, athletic department offices, student lounge space, allied health department offices, classrooms and locker rooms for both intercollegiate teams and community and staff.

Interior floor finishes and wall colors unify the building and include accents to highlight entries and social gathering spaces. Shades of color were used strategically to match the department. Athletics spaces use metals and bold colors, while the allied health department uses softer, subtler colors and woods.

The building addition was configured to wrap around existing buildings. This provides a new, unified exterior facade, as well as creates the additional space needed to accommodate the building’s functions. Materials were selected to coordinate with the rest of campus. Lighter-weight terra cotta and metal wall panels were used in lieu of the solid masonry walls of the original buildings.
