The Ken Byers Tennis Complex at Georgia Institute of Technology is home to one of the top collegiate tennis programs in the nation. A new facility was needed to meet the needs of the university, as well as provide a solution to overall campus circulation adjacent to the site, including safe pedestrian movement. The design team provided a modern, sustainable design solution that served as a “gateway” to the entire campus.

Designed to meet LEED Silver certification requirements, the complex replaces the old, outdated facility with one that features a new lobby, six competition courts, four practice courts and an indoor tennis center with six practice courts. The competition courts have spectator seating on the south base line with 500 fixed seats. Natural turf berm seating is provided at the ends of the courts.

The indoor tennis center is a pre-engineered metal building that has been architecturally treated to respond in kind to its context and other campus facilities. A two-story building is connected to the indoor practice courts and contains locker rooms, training rooms, spectator seating on the upper level overlooking the practice courts, a team lounge and coaches’ offices. The indoor practice center’s upper-level lobby provides views out over an entry plaza to the competition courts.
