The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club’s expansion and renovation was a much-needed transformation that enables the club, in existence since 1945, to meet the current demand and future needs of members.

The club is located within Nantucket’s Historic District, and as a result the exterior conforms to the traditional architectural style of the island. The design conceals the gymnasium’s large volume space by placing it on a slope, so that the front of the facility appears to be all one story in keeping with the surrounding community’s residential scale. Visitors now enter into a natural-light-filled waiting area, followed by a control desk that opens up to an inviting game room. From here one can turn left to the new two-court gymnasium, enter the new teen center, or turn right to proceed into the renovated existing building, where a renovated snack area, lounge, computer center and learning center are located, as well as ample storage space, restrooms and staff offices.

A critical design decision was to demolish, rather than renovate, the existing single-court gymnasium. This allowed for a logical progression of program through the building, as well as a new, two-court gymnasium. Code-required updates to accessibility and various HVAC systems also were addressed. In addition, the entire facility was moved to a state-of-the-art geothermal mechanical system.
