Situated amid the dynamic and thriving city of Cambridge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s athletic campus functions as the programmatic epicenter to the institute’s entire western campus. Home to the Engineers’ football, men’s and women’s soccer, and track and field programs, historic Steinbrenner Stadium serves not only MIT, but also the greater Cambridge community.

MIT’s athletic campus rejuvenation project featured a complete overhaul of aging infrastructure, including Steinbrenner Stadium’s track, field and stands. Stadium additions include a new press box, a steel I-beam grandstand and an entirely new synthetic track running surface. Working in conjunction with these improvements, the institute continued restoration efforts to include a rehabilitation of the varsity baseball and softball complex and the natural grass intramural and rugby field. The fields were stripped and regraded, and the baseball and softball fields received new outfield and perimeter fencing. Newly installed padding and windscreens reinforce MIT’s branding.

The project represents a large step forward in not only bolstering MIT’s western campus as a top-tier national athletic destination, but also enhancing student-athlete life and promoting a healthy community. These improvements play a critical role in shaping the current user experience, and will prove to be a great contribution to the tradition for the MIT Engineers.
