Hollyburn Country Club is one of British Columbia’s most prestigious private clubs. As such, it has undergone significant upgrades regularly, most recently replacing an ice slab and dasher board in its main arena, upgrading the hockey dressing rooms and renovating the spa’s change facilities.

As part of the arena renovation, the ice slab was enlarged to more closely approximate professional standards, and new support systems were incorporated. Behind-the-scenes improvements included seismic upgrades, an overhauling of the refrigeration and ammonia systems, and a revised exiting strategy. In addition, dressing rooms serving the hockey programs were upgraded and provided with enlarged showers and new millwork and finishes, while a new change room was created for figure skaters, complete with a ballet bar for pre-ice warm-up.

The spa’s change facilities, long overdue for an upgrade, were an important step in attracting new members. The goal was to create the feel of a high-end spa, as opposed to fitness center change rooms, and to incorporate contemporary fixtures and high-end finishes while still maintaining a relaxing, calm and warm feel. The layout was designed to make the most of the available space, while meeting modern expectations of privacy and comfort. The design team took an “everything in its place” approach. A great deal of thought went into designing a space for every possible detail, from hiding the mechanical and electrical systems behind sliding wood-panel doors to creating compartments for supplies and places to hide hair dryer cords.
