Philadelphia University?s ambitious plans for this athletic and recreation center project called for a renovation of the outdated, existing Althouse Gymnasium, as well as a new, expanded athletic facility. Before the design team could begin construction, however, many challenges had to be overcome — the most monumental being that the new facility had to be built on top of an existing parking garage and fit the constraints of the structure?s footprint.

In addition, the university decided to simultaneously begin construction on a new campus center directly next to the new building, regrade the entire site and implement campus utility upgrades. Visitors approaching the new, two-level center will find that it not only complements the new Kanbar Campus Center, but also the varied architectural style of the other 50 buildings found on the university?s grounds. To achieve this distinction, red brick was used for the facility?s exterior, together with precast concrete and copper elements.

From the main lobby, visitors can enter the new competition gymnasium, which features two side-by-side courts, bleacher seating for 1,254 spectators (2,500 for special events) and a large storage area. The many-windowed fitness center is the highlight of the first level. It features a variety of cardio and strength equipment, a large free weights area, offices and views out to the tree-lined campus.
