Plymouth Ice Center Expansion

Plymouth, MN
Construction Cost: $4.2 million
Area / Square Feet: 41,000
Occupancy Date: November 2004

From the choice of finishes to the use of a more environmentally friendly refrigerant, the Plymouth Ice Center expansion emphasizes comfort, efficiency and connection. The project involved the addition of a third ice sheet; a significant redesign of the front entry, lobby and concessions areas; and the creation of more team rooms and support spaces.

Green building components include a thermally efficient roof system, greentinted exterior glass, high-output fluorescent sports lighting, low-VOC paint, desiccant dehumidification, an ammonia refrigeration system and recycled building materials.

The new arena holds an NHL-size ice sheet and rear-loading seating for 492 spectators. This bleacher arrangement allows for a wide concourse at the top, creating a social gathering area complete with caf?-style tables. The new main entry and concessions space evoke a ?coffeehouse? feel with wireless Internet access, and the curvature of the space allows for a semi-private meeting area. This section of the arena also houses a vast array of windows with views to the outside and on-ice action. While the new team rooms emphasize utility and durability, varsity rooms created for Providence Academy feature custom wood lockers, video monitors and private restroom and shower facilities.
