The Charles R. Drew Wellness Center is located adjacent to a new housing redevelopment project and strives to engage not only the local Drew Park community, but also the city of Columbia as a whole. Major program components include an indoor eight-lane, 25-meter pool with access to an exterior plaza, a gymnasium, weight-training and cardiovascularfitness areas, an indoor jogging/walking track, a group exercise room, an instructional kitchen, a health screening room and a variety of multiuse spaces.
The weight-training and cardio area is located on the mezzanine level and overlooks the natatorium, while the elevated track surrounds the fitness area and runs along the perimeter of the gymnasium. The interior walls of the natatorium, gym and corridors consist of ground-faced concrete masonry units, requiring minimal maintenance. Meanwhile, the facility’s color schemes complement the natural lighting that is prevalent throughout the building.
The exterior fenestration components include brick, glass and aluminum panels, which provide a sleek backdrop to the residential materials used in the adjacent housing development.
