To take advantage of an existing corner location, the AtlantiCare Health System initiated a master plan for the development of a medical campus, with a wellness center complex housing a fitness center, medical clinic and physician’s office as its anchor.

In siting the building, and subsequently developing the master plan, great care was taken to maintain as many of the existing trees as possible. All new buildings and parking were placed along the periphery, leaving a substantial stand of trees within the center of the site.

The design of the wellness center necessitated a planning diagram of two distinct wings, one for the wellness center and the other for the medical office building. In future phases, remaining facilities will mimic the design of the medical office wing. The linear lobby is the connective device for the separate wings, extending this notion to the outside through the landscaping and canopy. At the exterior, a small oculus denotes the intersection of these volumes and the terminus to the lobby.

Within the facility, all recreation/exercise areas are arranged in a line, with the natatorium, locker rooms, and childcare and education space on the first floor, and physical therapy space, a track, the fitness center and group exercise space on the second.
