Heritage Park houses three areas memorializing the Major League Baseball franchise’s history in the new Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame — a two-tiered monument park setting that recognizes the greatest names in club history, 38 memorable moments in team history and the top 100 Indians players.

Heritage Park is located behind the center field wall of Progressive Field, in an area known as the “Batter’s Eye” zone. The design of a two-layer screen wall meets MLB’s mandate that a batter’s field of vision beyond the pitcher be uncluttered. The first layer of screening is all-natural, consisting of evergreen trees and hedges that soften the second layer — a decorative metal screen painted to match the railing systems throughout the ballpark.

A circular, ceremonial design helps create a contemplative and educational memorial space within the high-energy and busy context of the ballpark.

Sustainability was key in the design of Heritage Park. The existing picnic terraces were reused and modified by reshaping spaces with monuments, trellises, screen walls and landscaping. All materials were made and constructed locally. Additional green measures called for saving energy by setting timers to light monument plaques only during night games and controlling storm water through drains that make use of the sand beneath the terraces.
