Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre - Keyano College

Fort McMurray, AB
Construction Cost: $36 million (Canadian)
Area / Square Feet: 102,250
Occupancy Date: October 2007

This facility provides the competitive gymnasium floor for Keyano College student athletes, while accommodating the intramural and recreational use of the student and staff populations. The pressing need in the community for additional space has allowed Keyano College to partner with local soccer associations and other user groups to make best use of the additional two field houses. To assist in meeting the great need for fitness/ wellness space in the community, the fitness areas are meant to be shared by students and the general population.

The more simple bay spaces for the gymnasia and field house forms are placed to the north of the facility, screening the scale of these facilities from view by students and the public arriving at the main entrance. The front end of the building provides an attractive curved roof form that not only brings users into the facility but also provides an interior fitness space, enhancing the energy level within the facility. Materials on the facade are consistent with the institutional nature of the facility, as are those of the interior. The design solution provides substantial natural light to the interior core and brings superb participant and spectator visibility to all spaces within the facility. This enhances the opportunity for students and the general population to share the recreation and leisure activities with one another, increasing their participation and enjoyment.
