Shoreline Wellness & Rehabilitation Center

South Haven, MI
Construction Cost: $5.7 million
Area / Square Feet: 58,650
Occupancy Date: November 2007

This project transformed an existing 1970s-era grocery store into a state-of-the-art health and wellness center and medical specialty services facility that radiates energy, excitement and well-being in a disadvantaged area.

Built for an economical $97 per square foot, the center was designed to achieve LEED certification. Sustainable efforts included recycling 97 percent of the construction waste and using non- VOC off-gassing paints and materials.

The grocery store’s original roofline was replaced by a wave form that introduces natural light, adds volume and playfully connects the center to nearby Lake Michigan. Masonry light towers also draw on the city’s historic lakefront character and mark the center’s north and south entrances.

Shared spaces between the south and central entrances include the lobby, café, restrooms and meeting rooms/ classrooms. A central jogging track stretches through the heart of the facility, creating a natural boundary between rehab and wellness while also providing runners with visual connections to cardio and strength training areas. Open views reinforce the natural transition from rehabilitation to fitness, while the inviting interior utilizes colors specifically chosen to support each area’s activities. Views to the outdoors abound, and natural light symbolizes the potential for improved health and well-being.
