Splash Cove, Jim Allen Aquatic Center

Shawnee, KS
Construction Cost: $4.7 million
Area / Square Feet: 3.7 acres
Occupancy Date: May 2007

The city of Shawnee has an outdoor family aquatic center that was designed to accommodate the needs of the general population, but it was overcrowded and not geared for young children and their parents and grandparents. Therefore, this new aquatic facility, which replaced a pool that was functionally obsolete, was designed specifically for that market segment.

This project’s design provides an open view of the new pool area and bathhouse to the community and passersby. The bathhouse features a vaulted entry with an island control desk and swim-products sales counter, men’s and women’s changing rooms, two family changing rooms, a manager’s office with a separate cash control room, a concessions counter with a table seating area, a first-aid room and other ancillary areas. The design concept focused on creating an image of a trip to the beach while playfully complementing the design colors of the children’s museum next door. Smooth- and split-faced concrete blocks used in the bathhouse are color-matched to the “sandy beach” and “foamy surf.” Suspended under the large open wooden truss vault is a series of curvy blue canvas “waves” designed to give the feel of walking into the surf and then under the water.
