Zeeland West High School Natatorium

Construction Cost: $9.1 million
Area / Square Feet: 47,800
Occupancy Date: July 2006

The community of Zeeland has a longstanding tradition of excellence in aquatics. Having outgrown existing facilities, Zeeland acquired funding for a new natatorium that would supplement both Zeeland Public Schools and community recreation programs.

Initial plans sited the building as a standalone facility, but the final solution was developed as a cost-effective addition to the existing Zeeland West High School. Developed as a venue for more-advanced users and deep-water programs, the natatorium houses a 10-lane competition pool (16 practice lanes), 1- and 3-meter springboards, and an area that can accommodate water polo. The pool includes a movable bulkhead providing for 33.3-meter, 25-meter or 25-yard competition lengths, as well as recreational program flexibility. The speed of the pool is enhanced with a wave-reducing gutter design, 8-foot pool depth and under-floor water inlets. Other features include a full-color LED video/electronic timing system with custom starting blocks and an underwater camera, eDive scoring adjacent to the dive area, computer-controlled chemical feeders, home and visitor team locker rooms, and a 552-seat spectator viewing area.

The entry offers a panoramic view of the natatorium from both the lobby and its stairs as visitors ascend to the spectator area and upper concourse.
