Chapman University

Chapman University

Project Description

Chapman is an urban university located where land is at a premium. Thus, five major elements comprise this hybrid complex: a football/soccer field built over a two-level, 900-car subterranean parking garage; an aquatic facility with a 50-meter pool; stadium seating for football/soccer and aquatics; and a field house containing intercollegiate lockers, strength training facilities and coaches’ offices. An adjoining wing houses administrative offices and classrooms.

Inspired by the limited space available once pool and field dimensions were met, an innovative stadium seating structure includes 600 seats facing the aquatics facility and another 2,200 facing the football/soccer field. The seating areas share spectator support facilities. The structure’s uppermost level, which accommodates the press box and the Riach Stadium Terrace, provides excellent views into both venues, as well as to the campus and the mountains to the east.

The 47,300-square-foot field house component contains the strength training room, a satellite training room and lockers for all outdoor sports, coaches and officials. Offices for coaches overlook the field, with aquatic offices adjacent to the pool.
