Harrisonville’s new community center sits atop a prominent point on the city’s growing north side. An adjacent expanse of open land influenced the building’s Prairie-style design, which features deep overhangs that minimize the scale of large building masses. In addition, exterior building materials and color selections harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

Inside, patrons are afforded clear views of the major activity components. These include the natatorium with a zero-depth-entry leisure/exercise pool and six lap lanes; a gymnasium with three full-size basketball courts and two volleyball courts; cardio, free-weight and circuit-training areas; a 4,900-square-foot banquet hall with catering kitchen and full audiovisual capabilities; an indoor running track; aerobics studios; a senior center with kitchenette; a game room; and a teen center. Almost all activities are organized around the main lobby and reception areas — an efficient layout that reduces operational expenses and circulation space demands.

Warm tones were used throughout the building’s interior, complementing the exterior design. Banded precast concrete represents a distinct design motif that is repeated throughout the rec center. However, the jewel of the facility is its lobby, which features expanses of glass and clerestory windows.
