Southeast Missouri State University Student Aquatic Center

Construction Cost: $6.6 million
Area / Square Feet: 30,000
Occupancy Date: December 2007

The Southeast Missouri State University campus has been without aquatic facilities since 2003 budget cutbacks. University officials believe the opening of the 30,000-square-foot aquatic center — an addition to the university’s existing student recreation center — will increase marketability to prospective students.

The daylit, two-story space features durable materials and includes a six-lane lap pool, a leisure pool with a water slide, water basketball and volleyball, a 20-person-capacity hot tub, a zip-line ride, a rope swing and a bench overlooking windows framing the pool’s vanishing edge.

The most unique feature of the leisure pool is a realistic bouldering wall with a variety of climbing holds for all levels of expertise. Real and artificial plants, as well as other interior elements that resemble the look of the rock wall, build on the nature theme. Other amenities include men’s and women’s locker facilities, on-deck steam and sauna rooms, administrative offices, a first-aid office and storage spaces. Water aerobics, scuba diving and kayaking can be accommodated,
as well.
