Invensys Foxboro Branch YMCA Expansion

Construction Cost: $8.8 million
Area / Square Feet: 56,185
Occupancy Date: September 2008

An expansion of an 18,000-square-foot facility that was built in 2000, the YMCA now efficiently combines three primary elements: a family recreation center, a childcare center and a physical therapy/rehabilitation wing. The massing and design of the YMCA respond to its setting between the town’s center and its main recreation campus by incorporating contextual forms (larger volumes are reflective of the region’s historic mill and agrarian structures) and materials such as HardiPlank siding and exposed steel.

The centerpiece of the family recreation center is a pool that accommodates a full spectrum of aquatic programming, including progressive swim instruction, aqua-therapy and water-based play. Another prime venue is the Teen Center, which features an “exergaming” zone and an outdoor Teen Terrace. The program menu is filled out by a wellness center, group exercise studios and a gymnasium with wood panel walls and striking exposed steel framing.
