Built on a low-lying, 50-acre parcel of land on the perimeter of an urbanized area of Wichita, the city’s Northwest Branch YMCA boasts a bilinear organization of indoor activities, as well as a playground and other outdoor spaces. The building’s architecture responds to the southern exposure with intricately detailed shading louvers.

A panoptic transparency is obtained within the facility, revealing the diversity of available spaces for social and physical activities. Lofty volumes enclosing the gymnasium, gymnastics area and aquatics space are arrayed along the north edge of a linear promenade that extends the length of the facility. Meanwhile, two levels of activities — including cardiovascular fitness, strength training, aerobics, yoga, and Pilates — stretch the length of the Y’s south side.
