Through the expansion and renewal of an existing athletics facility, the university now offers a full spectrum of indoor and outdoor athletics and recreation programs, and it can forge new alliances with sports organizations seeking access to high-caliber facilities. A seamless combination of new construction and renovated spaces achieves a complete regeneration of the facility that respectfully integrates with the strong architectural character of the campus, while advocating a new model of reuse and sustainability.

A dramatic glass lobby asserts a bold and inviting new identity for the building, establishing a prominent gateway element for the main campus. A series of public plazas, pathways and landscaped spaces replaced an existing parking area, creating an attractive new pedestrian zone. Similarly, a new wing situated next to the river and existing launch sites contains a sports medicine suite, a fitness center, a climbing wall and a rowing center, enabling indoor and outdoor training for rowing and paddling.

Internally, strategic glazing allows for dramatic internal and external views throughout the building, creating a sense of openness and transparency. A double-height lobby space housing a wood-clad reception and café area serves as a vital new gathering space.

A philosophy of sustainable design was incorporated throughout the project, and a distinctive copper cladding system showcases the use of recycled local materials as part of the design, reinforcing an image that is sensitive to the university’s strong green mandate, while blending seamlessly with existing campus buildings.
