Designed around the school’s “Wellness for Life” campaign, the Stephen B. Swann Athletic and Wellness Center promotes healthy living and lifestyle options with state-of-the-art athletic facilities and a new dining commons dedicated to nutrition education.

New sports facilities include a competitive gymnasium, an indoor running track, a fitness center, sports medicine facilities, a dance studio, a wrestling room/group cycling studio, expanded locker rooms, a team room and coaching offices, as well as concessions and equipment storage areas.

The brick exterior and low rooflines harmonize with the surrounding campus architecture. Large roof overhangs and covered walkways help control and soften the effect of the intense southern sun. Interior materials such as warm wood finishes enhance natural daylighting and create bright and lively spaces.

The Daryl Johnston Family Dining Commons, named in honor of the former Dallas Cowboys fullback, provides a 480-seat dining room overlooking a spring-fed quarry, as well as an innovative kitchen and meal serving area. The kitchen serves as a laboratory where students and parents can learn from nutrition experts and professional chefs. A nutrition-based curriculum will continue to be integrated into the lower, middle and upper schools, under the guidance of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center and the ESD Nutrition Curriculum Committee.
