Lane Community College Health, Physical Education and Athletics Facilities Renovation

Eugene, Ore.
Construction Cost: $9.2 million
Occupancy Date: December 2010

This two-part project consisted of a full replacement of an existing track and field facility and construction of a new soccer field, as well as a renovation and expansion of the Physical Education building. An IAAF-standard track with synthetic-turf infield replaced an outdated and noncompliant track. A two-tone color scheme, lawn berms, leaning rail and other contemporary features were used to create a spectator-friendly design.

The Physical Education building renovation expanded the entry wall and opened up the surrounding hallway walls to create a more inviting reception area. New full-glass entry doors and hallway windows allow for visual connection of passersby to activities within. Floor-to-ceiling glazing brings light into the new space, and large-scale graphics showcase the Titan spirit. Glass garage doors along the exterior wall allow both air and light into a previously dark, stuffy fitness center.

The addition provided multipurpose classrooms and a dance studio. A natural glulam wood beam and wood decking structure opens the view of the dance studio, creating a warm and serene atmosphere. A second-story space is connected visually by an overlook with a large window looking down into the dance studio, and large portions of concrete stair were removed to further open the view.
