Nashua YMCA

Nashua, N.H.
Construction Cost: $8 million
Area / Square Feet: 44,000
Occupancy Date: May 2011

Constructed in the 1980s, the outdated YMCA of Greater Nashua was in desperate need of a fresh image, as well as a more convenient, non-downtown location. Located on the city's preexisting recreation campus, which already boasts community fields, an ice rink and adequate parking, the new Y building organizes components under one long shed that forms the organizing spine of the center.

The two-story spine offers prime views of the gymnasium, track, wellness center and family pool, serves as the building's main circulation and provides the primary source of natural light. The indoor track strategically weaves through primary spaces on the second level.

Two other elements define this facility as a true community center. The fireplace, which is located off the café and pool-viewing gallery, provides a sense of warmth and kinship. Multiple seating areas, meanwhile, enhance connectivity.

Wood and a multitude of colors are incorporated throughout the facility. The exterior is a combination of alternative block coursing and colored metal panels that give the appearance of a modern lodge, while the interior features stained concrete and wood decking.

No additional land or natural terrain was disturbed for parking as part of the building project, making this both a cost-efficient and sustainable development.
