Malton Community Centre Pool Expansion

City of Mississauga, Ont.
Construction Cost: $9 million (Canadian)
Area / Square Feet: 24,000
Occupancy Date: July 2011

The consolidation of the aquatics program into the Malton Community Centre is an example of adaptive design leading to environmental stewardship by reusing an existing building. The design team overcame significant challenges to bring this project to fruition, including planning, budget and schedule constraints imposed through a federally funded stimulus program. Concerted effort was made to meet the needs of all stakeholders — including the facility staff, who thanks to detailed sequencing and design considerations were able to continue operating the existing building throughout construction.

The center benefits from a location along the pastoral lands of the Malton Greenway, and abundant glass in the aquatics addition allows users to take in the scenic views. The addition aligns an extended lobby space to the existing internal public "street" and provides entry from the parkland and splash pad to the south. This entrance is under the protection of a new large canopy, which provides a renewed sense of place.

The project is a recent recipient of a March of Dimes Award for accessibility.
