As the first home courts for Tiger athletics and intramural sports, Rothwell Gym and Brewer Field House both played major roles in making Mizzou memories for nearly 100 years. The renovation of Rothwell honored this tradition by retaining the original limestone facade. The expansion of these venues into the Student Recreation Complex, however, serves the 21st century needs of the entire campus community.

In response to student voices, the new fitness center provides nearly 20,000 square feet of space and is a bold example of the high-energy environment demanded by an active generation. A thumping sound system sets the pace, complemented with controlled lasers and lights, a multimedia widescreen theater and a refreshment bar. For students who prefer a more low-key workout environment, an adjacent alternative area has been set aside. A glass-enclosed, 40-foot climbing tower rises through the fitness center. At the base of the tower, cross-trainers can practice their moves on the everchallenging bouldering wall.

The new state-of-the-art aquatic center is home to the MU Tigers swimming and diving teams, as well as a number of campus and community swim clubs. It features a 50-meter competition pool, a 10-meter diving platform, springboard diving and a 1,000-seat spectator gallery. A specialized timing and display system has been incorporated into the facility design.

The Rothwell Gymnasium was renovated into the new tropical-themed Club Pool, which features a soothing waterfall, zero-depth entry, a fountain, a current channel, a hidden grotto and an oversized whirlpool. Just outside the Club Pool, a heated outdoor pool greets students and members near the new southeast entrance. Its large deck serves as a gathering place for sunbathers and provides space for social programs. After sundown, a raised hearth fireplace becomes a popular location for evening events.
