In 2004, Carleton University was in the midst of a major expansion to its sports and recreation facilities. The site for the ice rink was extremely restricted with requirements to maintain an existing outdoor soccer pitch and parking lot, the Alumni Hall basketball facility and a circa-1960s gymnasium building.

With a design solution wrapping around two sides of the gymnasium, Carleton University?s Ice House boasts two ice sheets and 14 changing rooms. By locating seating for 500 varsity-rink spectators to a second level above the changing rooms, designers capitalized on the arena?s two-story clear-span volume, reduced the building?s footprint and introduced a dynamic bridge and stair element to the lobby.

The entrance and service areas are clad in Renaissance stone to complement Alumni Hall, and the resulting elevations create a unified appearance. Inside, Carleton?s team colors of red and black are softened to red and charcoal, with an introduction of cream and light green to provide warmth. The lobby?s ceramic-tile floor is arranged in a quilt-like pattern to add interest.
