Since the Camden Youth Soccer Club expanded to two playing fields last year, the organization has exploded, organizers said.

The league registered 336 children to play last fall, according to volunteer coach and board member Bryan Leib, an increase of more than 100 from the previous year. On Saturday, when the league's indoor winter season begins, about 90 children are expected to be in attendance, nearly double the number in the indoor program when it started two years ago.

Last year's fall soccer club played on newly refurbished fields at Von Nieda Park in the city's Cramer Hill section for the first time, as well as at Camden High School. The expansion was the first step by the Camden Health and Athletic Association (CHAA), a youth sports nonprofit launched in June by representatives of the Cooper Foundation, the charitable arm of Cooper University Health Care. Since then the CHAA also has worked with local basketball teams and other sports organizations in the city.

The league's indoor soccer season at the Kroc Center in Camden runs weekly through March 18. Registration is still open to Camden children ages 4 through 14, and there is a sign-up session Thursday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center at 1865 Harrison Ave. from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 per player.
