Coastal Carolina Breaks Ground for Stadium Expansion

Coastal Carolina University, known for its teal-colored turf, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Brooks Stadium on Tuesday.

The stadium expansion project will feature two phases, the first upping the facility’s seating capacity from about 9,200 to 15,000. The latter figure is the minimum amount for paid-attendance required by an NCAA rule for membership within FBS, which Coastal Carolina will enter this year as a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The second phase will tack on an additional 5,000 seats for 2018, according to WBTW.com.

The first phase is expected to be complete later this year.

CCU officials, including athletic director Matt Hogue met with architects in November to set final plans for the expansion project, which faces a challenge with the site being near a busy intersection.

“We’re very grateful for this impressive expansion to Brooks Stadium, an improvement that will make a significant impact on providing our student-athletes a championship experience,” Hogue told WBTW.

“It’s going to be so exciting to see this place in its full complement in a couple of years with twenty thousand folks watching us defeat a Power Five opponent,” Hogue said.
