The architectural plans for what was first called Duke Indoor Stadium were drawn by the Philadelphia firm of Horace Trumbauer. The chief designer of Trumbauer's firm was Julian Abele, the first black man to graduate from the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts School in Paris. Abele designed Cameron Indoor Stadium and much of the Duke West Campus. On Oct. 16, 1937, Trumbauer wrote to Duke President William Few, "I am sending you under separate cover rough studies of the proposed indoor stadium designed in accordance with the recommendations I made to you while in Durham this week.
