Reviews of Lifeguard Vigilance Training DVD; and AthleticIQ.com

Visual Aid Two short videos - Disappearing Dummies: Why Lifeguards Can't See and The 5-Minute Scanning Strategy - are included on the new DVD Lifeguard Vigilance Training (Human Kinetics, $79.95). Hosted by world-renowned aquatic safety expert (and frequent Athletic Business Conference speaker) Tom Griffiths, both segments appearing on the 22-minute DVD explore some of the most common lifeguarding concerns. Disappearing Dummies addresses the difficulty of seeing and identifying a body at the bottom of a pool, while The 5-Minute Scanning Strategy introduces a proven approach for lifeguards to stay more alert and focused - a strategy that is now a requirement for all Ellis & Associates and Starfish Aquatics StarGuard lifeguards.

Jock Stock After some initial delays, Athletic IQ (athleticiq.com) recently launched a standardized evaluation for high school student-athletes that electronically measures body composition, flexibility, speed, agility, reaction time, and upper- and lower-body power. The program, developed by former NFL scout Randy Tyson and a team of engineers and university-based human-performance experts, carries the support of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and is billed as the athletic equivalent of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (not as another recruiting service). Facility operators can host an evaluation event for free - see the special online section for previews of testing procedures - and the test is free to participants, too. Student-athletes, whose academic credentials are included in their files, are able to view their results online, forward them to colleges and compare scores with peers. www.athleticiq.com
