Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness

Greensboro, NC 2017

Project Description

Student development

As the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) student population continues to grow, providing recreational facilities that meet students’ unique and diverse needs is a top priority. Students desire a place where they can play harder, explore farther, grow stronger, reflect deeper, accomplish more and enjoy life. These principles served as the guiding force behind the wellness center.

A destination point

The new $70 million building is located in UNCG’s southern campus expansion, a mixed-use development of residential, student services and retail. Serving as the primary activity center and destination point for the entire campus, the Leonard J. Kaplan Center is more than just a student recreation center. It has become an integral part of the UNCG experience for students and the building block for future campus developments.

Expanded facilities, minds

The Leonard J. Kaplan Center more than doubles the size of UNCG’s previous recreation building. Featuring the concepts of universal design, the facility has the capacity to accommodate all users with high-demand activities, including cardiovascular fitness, group fitness, free weights, weight machines and informal recreation. Students can also enjoy new aquatic facilities, an indoor climbing wall, basketball and multi-activity courts, and many other amenities designed with quality of student life in mind.
