North Hempstead officials plan to open the pool at Clinton G. Martin Park on June 30, marking the end of a renovation โ€” and disputes over its cost โ€” that started last spring.

The New Hyde Park pool was closed in September 2016 for its first upgrading since the 1980s. In April 2017, town officials announced that bids for the renovation came in higher than the $14.6 million budgeted for the work, which included renovating locker rooms, adding a children's pool and a waterslide, and replacing pumps, filters and other infrastructure.

During two public meetings last spring, residents said they wanted North Hempstead to accept one of the higher bids so the work could be started and completed on time, but others wanted the town to rebid the project in hopes of a lower price. The town accepted a $19.4 million bid from Wantagh-based Gramercy Group. Ultimately the town paid $23 million for the work because officials included a refurbished pool entrance, upgraded tennis courts and a storage building.

After accepting Gramercy's bid, town officials promised residents the pool would open in time for this summer.

Town officials, including Supervisor Judi Bosworth, said they believe residents will like the newly renovated facilities, which also include new pavement and a recreation room.

"We are all excited for the opening of this beautiful pool park facility that will be a fixture in the community for generations to come," Councilman Peter Zuckerman, whose district includes New Hyde Park, said in a statement.

The new facility will primarily benefit residents in the New Hyde Park Special Park District. Homeowners in the district will see their taxes rise by about $100 a year to repay bonds that funded the renovations, and they can use the pool for free on June 30 and July 1. Any North Hempstead resident can swim at the pool by purchasing a seasonal membership, ranging from $88 for seniors to $248 for a family. The town is also offering a new five-day pass for $60 that allows a resident to visit the pool for any five days without paying a membership.

Park district resident Marianna Wohlgemuth said residents are eagerly anticipating seeing the renovations. She said it will be exciting to have a new recreation room, tennis courts and a kiddie splash pad.

"This facility will be ideal for families and seniors alike," Wohlgemuth said. "We will have a pool we can all enjoy and be proud of."
