Three high school students in New Jersey were hospitalized last week after suffering heat-related illness during a physical education class.
According to nj.com, the students from The Bergen Arts and Science Charter High school were in stable condition.
School spokeswoman Dawn Fantasia said in a statement that in light of high temperatures, “physical activities were modified to stay within the shade, with water made available. Physical education teachers were present outside to monitor the students' activities.”
Despite accommodations made for the heat, affected students reported not feeling well while running laps outside as part of a test. They went to the nurse who recommended they be taken to a hospital for evaluation. The school has suspended all outdoor activities out of an abundance of caution.
Parent Joe Dymarczyk told News 12 that he wasn’t happy about the decision to have the kids exercising outside. "I think whoever made this decision for the children to do this today could have put it off until Monday or Tuesday. This isn't right," he told the television station.
