Clarke University will expand its portfolio of offered intercollegiate sports to 21 when it debuts an esports program for the 2019 competition season.
Esports — organized, multi-player video gaming — is one of the fastest growing varsity sports on college campuses nationwide. The National Association of Collegiate Esports was founded in 2016 and has grown from seven programs to more than 50.
Clarke will join St. Ambrose, Grand View, Morningside and Hawkeye Community College as the only Iowa colleges with competitive esports programs.
Josh Moris and Mike Dempewolf have been tabbed to coach the team and have already begun recruiting their initial class.
"Clarke will attract and recruit a new type of student-athlete," Moris said in a statement. "With the inclusion of esports, we are bridging the realms of technology and sports by making competitions accessible both physically and online. In addition, esports bring a new way for the Clarke community to become involved — virtually — to root for their team."
Clarke will compete in the League of Legends North American League North Division.
