Thiel College is rescheduling several sporting events because of a gastrointestinal illness affecting some students on the Mercer County campus.

The events include Saturday's football game against Washington & Jefferson College. It is tentatively rescheduled for Monday evening, but a final decision will be made Sunday afternoon, the Presidents Athletic Conference said in a news release.

Thiel's athletic department announced Wednesday evening that it was canceling all practices and games through Sunday, the release said.

The college in Greenville, about 75 miles north of Pittsburgh, began working that morning with the state Department of Health and Department of Agriculture to determine the cause of the illnesses, the release said. The departments advised Thiel to cancel events involving close physical contact, particularly sporting events.

A Thiel spokesman said test results will likely not be available until Monday.

In addition to the football game against W&J, soccer, tennis and women's volleyball events also are being rescheduled.
