The NCAA commission that formed in response to the recent FBI investigations and scandals surrounding college basketball met for the first time late last week via teleconference.
That commission, chaired by former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, is charged with proposing and presenting fixes to the system to the NCAA Board of Directors at the group’s April meeting, according to USA Today.
“The Commission on College Basketball met for the first time Friday, October 20th via teleconference to discuss its charge and various organizational issues,” Rice said in a statement. “The members of the commission expressed their commitment to finding lasting solutions for the problems that face collegiate basketball and reaffirmed its independence from the NCAA governance structure. Over the course of the next six months, the Commission will meet to discuss the issues, evaluate data and engage key stakeholders.”
“Our goal is to enhance and protect the intercollegiate athletic experience for every student-athlete and, in doing so, to safeguard the integrity of the game.”
An FBI sting operation last month led to arrests as charges were filed against representatives of athletic apparel companies, sports agents and college basketball coaches.
The commission’s aim is to address the NCAA’s relationship with apparel companies and the NBA, and to promote transparency throughout the organization.
