NCAA Mulling Extra Eligibility for Winter Sports

The NCAA menā€™s basketball oversight committee is reportedly considering granting winter sports athletes an extra year of eligibility. The proposal could receive a vote from the Division I council as early as its next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 13-14.

The council already supported a similar motion for fall sports athletes. According to 247Sports.com, the council recommended that student-athletes who opt out of competition, or whose seasons are affected by COVID-19 be granted an extension of their five-year eligibility period and an additional year of competition if they participate in 50 percent or less than the number of competitions allowed in each sports.

ā€œIn this time of uncertainty, the council members are working to create additional flexibility for college athletes whose seasons have been negatively impacted by the pandemic,ā€ said council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. ā€œEvery day things are changing in college sport, and we want to be as responsive as possible, with the best information, to help student-athletes and their families make important decisions for their future.ā€
