University at Buffalo Athletic Director Allen Greene is heading to Auburn University in Alabama in the same position, sources confirmed to The News on Wednesday night.

His appointment needs to be approved by the school's board of trustees, which could happen this week. A school spokesman said Auburn would have no comment on the athletic director search until an announcement was made.

The move was first reported by AuburnSports.com.

Greene, 40, has served as UB's athletic director for just over two years, being named on Nov. 24, 2015. He served as deputy AD and senior associate AD under Danny White, who left the school to become athletic director at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Greene has played a big role in the funding for construction of an $18 million practice facility for the football team and in the athletic department, reaching an apparel deal with Nike.

Greene will be the third African-American athletic director in Southeastern Conference history after Damon Evans, who previously was at Georgia, and David Williams at Vanderbilt.

He succeeds Jay Jacobs, who announced in November that he would step down by June 2018 or earlier if a successor was hired.

Neither Greene nor an athletic department spokesman responded to messages left for comment by The News on Wednesday night.
