As Irma Bears Down, Florida Schools Cancel Games

With powerful Category 5 Hurricane Irma tracking closer to Florida, the Palm Beach County public-school high school football schedule has been completely postponed.

It was announced Tuesday afternoon that all Palm Beach County schools will be closed Thursday and Friday of this week, and the Post also has learned that all public-school, after-school activities have been postponed or canceled for the week starting this afternoon.

As a result, all high school football games at public schools for the week also will be postponed or canceled.

Some private schools already had moved their games because of the storm.

*King's Academy's home game against Glades Day, scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m., was moved to 7 p.m. Thursday, but the schools later decided to postpone the game.

*Jupiter Christian's road game against Ocoee-Legacy Charter, originally scheduled for Friday, has been tentatively moved to 6 p.m. Thursday

*Boca Raton Christian's home game against Somerset Canyons, scheduled for Friday , was moved to 4 p.m. Thursday.

The postponements spoiled a schedule of games that featured three Post Top 10 matchups: No. 7 Park Vista (1-1) vs. No. 8 Wellington (1-1); No. 2 Pahokee (1-0) vs. No. 5 Atlantic (1-1); and No. 9 Glades Central (1-1) vs. No. 6 Dwyer (1-1).

Wellington and Dwyer are coming off losses. In all, four ranked teams lost last Friday -- including Palm Beach Central and American Heritage -- and this week's new poll reflects the damage. Dwyer fell to Atlantic, Palm Beach Central dropped its road game against Melbourne Central Catholic, Wellington suffered a blowout against Vero Beach and American Heritage was shut out by Fort Lauderdale-Cardinal Gibbons.

Oxbridge Academy, which blew out Pembroke Pines-Flanagan, and Pahokee, which had a bye week, hold on to the top two spots in this week's rankings. Otherwise, there was plenty of shuffling.

Palm Beach Gardens looked strong once again, blowing out Royal Palm Beach, so the Gators move up to No. 3 . Palm Beach Central holds on to the No. 4 spot after losing to reigning state semifinalist Melbourne Central Catholic. Atlantic rounds out the top five after beating Dwyer, which moves down to six.

Park Vista moves up two spots after hanging on to beat West Boca, and Wellington drops to No. 8. Glades Central moves up a spot after squeaking past Orange Park-Oakleaf, and Seminole Ridge enters the rankings at No. 10.
