The drunken mob situation before a men's basketball game against the University of North Carolina last year has prompted Duke University to expand its tent city ā known as Krzyzewskiville ā for would-be ticket-buyers.
In anticipation of a Feb. 20 visit by UNC, flex tenting will replace the walk-up line that tried to push its way into Cameron Indoor Stadium for the Carolina game last season. According to the The Chronicle, an independent Duke news source, students last season were eating signs, throwing full beer cans, rampantly cutting in line and casting aside barricades in a drunken rush to try to get into the game.
The Chronicle reports that tenting outside Duke's basketball venue is divided into categories ā black, blue and white ā each of which has distinct requirements with occupants admitted to the game with differing priority. Flex tents, however, are not guaranteed entry.
Flex tents will be located within a 4,600-square-foot area outside Ambler Tennis Stadium. A scavenger hunt called the Race to the Secret Spots will determine flex tent ordering, with the first 30 groups receiving white tenting spots and the next 30 heading to flex tents, according to Duke senior and co-head line monitor Steve Hassey. "We're hopeful that every flex tent will get into the game, but unfortunately, due to the size constraints of the student section, we can only guarantee that black, blue and white will gain entrance," Hassey says. "We picked the number of flex tents, however, with the goal that each one would get a spot in Cameron."
