HUNTERSVILLE FAMILY FITNESS & AQUATICS Huntersville, N.C. 704 766-2222 www.hffa.com With its extensive aquatics programs and impressive fitness center, Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics (HFFA), Huntersville, N.C., offers something for every member. Says Executive Director Molly Burroughs, "[We are] most proud of the fact that our membership is inclusive of the demographics around us, [so the] community is well-served." Its Presbyterian Healthcare Fitness Center offers 50-plus group exercise classes per week, and is the exclusive Les Mills service provider for the area, offering BodyPump, BodyCombat, BodyFlow, BodyStep and RPM classes. The facility also offers dance lessons, tae kwon do and many more group fitness classes. There is a fullsize gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, including basketball leagues, and education classes such as nutrition, family health, children's health and fitness, smoking cessation and more. HFFA was also the first fitness center in North Carolina to offer FreeMotion Fitness equipment. Says Burroughs, "Since our members vary greatly, both in age and physical capabilities, it was important for us to choose a manufacturer that matched the diversity of our membership.... Our members love it!" But aquatics is where HFFA really shines. It offers American Red Cross swim lessons, lifeguard training, private and semi-private training, and something called Fuel Diving. Says Burroughs, "Fuel Diving is a recreational and competitive program featuring state-of-the-art equipment in one of the best indoor pools in the country. Students develop strength, flexibility and confidence while learning dives off the 1- and 3-meter spring boards." The program accommodates divers of various ages and skill levels, and teaches fundamental skills for safe diving. The aquatics facilities at HFFA are just as impressive as its programs. "You'd be amazed at the facilities that support HFFA's aquatics programs and competitive events," Burroughs says. There is a 50-meter cold pool with a 10-meter dive tower, two 1- meter spring boards and two 3-meter springboards. The pool's depth ranges from 6 feet to the 17-foot dive well that is built for competition. The pool can be customized with moveable, floating bulkheads that can subdivide the pool into two sections. Thirty-two feet of deck space on each side of the pool can accommodate 1,000 event spectators. The facility also has a 25- yard indoor warm pool for warm-up, training, swim meets and recreational swimming; a zero-depth-entry outdoor water park; a staging area for competitions that accommodates 300 people; and aquatic exercise equipment and toys for participants of all ages. Among the aquatics events that HFFA has hosted were the 2004 World Cup Diving Trials and the 2005 Speedo National Diving Championship. In addition to revenue from events and aquatic lessons and programs, HFFA also profits from its personal training and small group training programs. For small group training, groups of two to 10 members who have similar fitness goals can train together. The training is focused on a particular discipline or particular type of equipment, explains Burroughs. For example, Functional Group Training uses FreeMotion fitness equipment. "HFFA is the only facility in the region to feature the FreeMotion Fitness Cable Column," Burroughs says. Other small group training includes Prenatal, Youth Training, Women on Weights and Pilates. Another profit center for HFFA is its Here2Grow PreSchool program for children ages two to five years. The preschool program (open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.) "is designed to develop the cognitive, emotional, health, fitness and nutritional needs of the children, and promote growth and learning," Burroughs says. Activities include nutrition education, arts and crafts, swim time and swim lessons, pre-reading skill development and fitness activities. "Parents, past and current, credit the quality of instruction and creativity of the curriculum for much of their children's preparedness for the big step to kindergarten," Burroughs says. Another popular children's offering is HFFA's After School program. This program for school-age children provides an opportunity for them to explore extracurricular activities such as swimming, fitness, sports, games, and arts and crafts. Daily themes are designed to be educational and fun. The student/teacher ratio is 15 to 1, and the program is offered Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The facilities and programs at HFFA are a big hit with members. Usage has increased 121 percent over the past three years, and membership numbers have increased 50 to 60 percent, says Burroughs. HFFA has figured out the secret to bringing members in and keeping them happy.
