Eastern Michigan University is nearing completion of a $20 million sports medicine and training facility. Now the school just needs to figure out how to pay for it.
According to Michigan Live, the EMU athletics department is still well short of its fundraising goals for the 60,000-square-foot training facility, which includes a new football video board in Rynearson Stadium.
With a hard opening slated for next month, the athletic department is well short of the $12 million it committed to raise after the Board of Regents approved $8 million for the project.
EMU spokesman Geoff Larcom said the university is halfway to its fundraising goal but wouldn’t give specifics on how it planned to reach that goal.
“The athletic director and his staff continue to work diligently and productively with a variety of potential supporters and donors as they build new relationships and maintain and fortify longstanding ones,” Larcom said. “We remain 100 percent committed to achieving the fundraising target.”
Raising funds is an uphill battle after the university lost out on a $6 million cash pledge from the Power2Change Foundation, which rescinded the donation following the departure of EMU athletic director Heather Lyke who left for University of Pittsburgh.
